Former middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva made his comeback to the boxing headlines on Saturday night against Nick Diaz. The fight was scheduled for 5 rounds and held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas after Silva used up a year recovering from a dreadful broken left leg.
Both the challengers are known for their thrilling fighting styles and heart stopping finishes. In the early rounds of the fight, both fighters got their licks in. Diaz brutishly taunted Silva by literally laying down on the floor and pressing himself against the ring to tease the spider. In the early rounds, Diaz gained the initial advantage with his left hand and effectively pressured Silva but after that he couldn’t avoid the long-legged, harmful counters of Silva which swelled up Diaz’s face. In the final round, Diaz got various cuts around his eyes and seemed unable to continue the fight. The judges awarded Silva the fight with an undisputed decision with the scores of 50-45, 50-45, 49-46.
39 year old Silva has recently recovered from a horrible injury on his left leg which required a steel rod implantation to assist him to heal after a 2nd consecutive fight loss to Chris Weidman.
Nicholas Robert Diaz, an American MMA fighter, former Strike force winner and ex-UFC welterweight title competitor, had his last fight in Nevada where Diaz scored a positive post fight check for marijuana.
According to critics, Diaz’s abilities aren’t in doubt, he smartly uses the ring but will do anything to win the bout. He revealed in various public appearances that he would easily win the fight with Silva as he does not consider him a challenging opponent. He said that he will show his full potential in the bout with Silva in terms of athleticism and strength. Diaz said that his strength is to be more versatile.
Silva stated once while facing the media, Nick is really a challenging fighter, but it is a sport not a stress bout. But experts claim that MMA can actually be both, relaying upon who can enforce their will.
