Jorge Masvidal may soon be fighting for the UFC welterweight title if he is able to defeat former ONE FC and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren at UFC 239. Masvidal will be next in line for a title shot, according to his recent interview.
Jorge Masvidal’s comments initially impressed Ben Askren but then he wasted no time to hit back at him.
Askren posted on Twitter.
“Well they had to dangle some type of Carrot to get him to agree to take a beating.”
Many praised Jorge Masvidal for an outstanding performance against Welterweight title contender Darren Till at UFC London last month. The show didn’t stop there as Masvidal got into a fist fight with Leon Edwards backstage during his post-fight interview.
Askren made an impressive entry into the UFC when he scored a submission win over former 170-pound champ Robbie Lawler at UFC 235. The win turned controversial when Lawler revealed that he hadn’t tapped out. Rather, he gave a thumbs up to referee Herb Dean that he’s OK.
The winner of the fight between Masvidal and Askren would take on the winner of the upcoming title fight between Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman.
As for Jorge Masvidal, the MMA veteran recently cracked the UFC’s top-five welterweight rankings after his stunning knockout win over Darren Till at UFC Fight Night 147.
Earlier there were rumors that Masvidal may have to fight Leon Edwards after their backstage altercation. However, UFC passed on that idea and went on to book ‘Gamebred’ against former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren.
Masvidal vs. Askren will take place later this year at UFC 239, July 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
