McGregor Signs Historic Boxing match with Mayweather
With almost a yearlong back and forth between today’s most feared MMA athlete, ‘The Notorious One’, Conor McGregor (21 – 3) and one of boxing’s greatest of all time, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather (49 – 0).
Two division MMA Champ vs unbeaten Boxing Champ.
The implications – HUGE.
Fans from both sports are going wild, some insisting this match-up is ridiculous while the other half remains curious as to which athlete comes on top – the boxer or the MMA fighter.
We at RDX think this is a phenomenal opportunity for fans on both sides of the spectrum to join in and help make this a historical event. We know that McGregor and Dana White are already on it but is the retired boxing legend ready for such a showdown?
Here’s what the Irishman had to say:
“It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management,”
“The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.”
This statement comes after Floyd Mayweather insisted that Conor signs the agreement to get the ball rolling, expressing that if there is a fight that would bring the 40 year old boxing phenom out of retirement this would be it. All that is left is to have Dana White negotiate the terms with Mayweather’s team.
In a recent interview the self-proclaimed ‘Greatest of all Time’ said:
“I’m not here to throw anybody under the bus, [and] I can’t sit here and say that they are waiting on us. I’m not saying that. And we’re not waiting on them. I have a team for [negotiating] but as soon as their side communicates with our side, then the fight will happen.”
While much is on the line in form of (tons of) money, and the title of being the ‘baddest man on the planet’ – how will this affect the future of Boxing and MMA?
Personally – we can’t wait. McGregor may be an MMA fighter but if he can focus all his attention on movement and his hands rather than his entire body; coupled with his youth, power and speed, he just may have a chance against the world’s most defensive and sparsely hit boxer. At the end of the day, apart from skill level, the match-up may well fall on youth vs experience, the latter of which Mayweather has a wealth of.
