The first episode of the RDX Sports Podcast with Simon Head is now live, as I get behind the mic to talk fights on our brand new show.
On the debut episode of the show, I chat to longtime friend, press-row colleague and internationally renowned MMA journalist and fight commentator John Morgan to unpack a host of the big talking points of the week in mixed martial arts.
But, despite having a predominantly MMA flavour, the show has a little hint of boxing running through it, as we discuss last weekend’s boxing match between former UFC superstars Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal.
Diaz ended the night with the majority decision victory, but did the right man get his hand raised? And how differently do MMA media members view boxing matches when it comes to scoring? What’s next for both Diaz and Masvidal, and could a return to the UFC be on the cards? We offered our take.
The topic of conversation then turned to the crossover options that are available to out-of-contract fighters in 2024, and whether the ecosystem exists for an “MMA boxing” promotion to cash in on ageing fighters’ star power once their time at the top of mixed martial arts has come to an end.
We then discussed the ongoing will-they, won’t-they saga involving Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor. Will we ever see them fight? And if not, what should Chandler do next?
And, with UFC 304 fast approaching, we kicked off the build-up to fight night in Manchester by discussing the two title fights at the top of the card. Do the British world champions have the edge over the American challengers? After both of the first bouts ending in unfortunate circumstances, who will walk away victorious from their respective rematches? And how much of a leveller could the middle-of-the-night timing of the event prove to be? The American fighters will need to make the trip across the pond, but they’ll still be fighting on US time.
There was plenty to discuss on the first episode of the RDX Sports Podcast with Simon Head. You can check out the video version of the show via the YouTube player above, and you can subscribe to get the show in audio form on Spotify.
