Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from boxing.
The former unified world heavyweight champion has called time on his career for the second time, after walking back his decision to hang up the gloves back in 2022. Now he’s announced his retirement once again, taking to his Instagram page to share the short announcement with his 6.9 million followers.
“Hi everybody. I’m going to make this short and sweet,” he began.
“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it.
“And I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless, everybody. See you on the other side. Get up!”
The strange Dick Turpin reference could relate to the result of his last bout, where he was defeated on the scorecards, for the second time, by Oleksandr Usyk. After the fight, both Fury and his promoter Frank Warren were convinced he had done enough to win the fight and dethrone the Ukrainian world champion.
His breakthrough moment on the world stage came in 2015 when he defeated Wladimir Klitschko to capture the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight titles.
A spell away from the sport followed as he battled mental health issues that saw him become an advocate for mental health. But he would later return to the sport and, after fighting to a split draw with WBC champion Deontay Wilder in December 2018, eventually went on to capture the WBC and The Ring titles with back-to-back stoppages of “The Bronze Bomber in February 2020 and October 2021, respectively.
Fury then defended his heavyweight crown twice with victories over Dillian White and Derek Chisora, before getting off the canvas to outpoint former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in a huge crossover fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
That led to his final two bouts, as he lost a split decision to Usyk in a title unification bout last May, then dropped a unanimous decision to the same man in a rematch in December.
Fury retires with a career record of 34 victories, two defeats (both to Usyk) and one draw.
