The UFC’s women’s strawweight division will take centre stage at the UFC APEX as the first UFC event of the year takes place on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Top 10-ranked strawweight contenders Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Ribas will go head to head in a rematch in the main event, with both women looking to break into championship contention in the 115-pound division.
Both women looked ready for action as they stepped onto the scale at the official weigh-ins on Friday, with the two fighters registering the same official weight, coming in at 116 pounds, right on the non-title limit.
The co-main event features welterweight action, with Argentine veteran Santiago Ponzinibbio facing Carlston Harris, and a stand-up war is expected when former kickboxing world champion Cesar Almeida takes on heavy-handed knockout artist Abdul Razak Alhassan.
There’s also an intriguing middleweight matchup on deck, as Chris Curtis makes his return from injury to face Russia’s Roman Kopylov, while the main card kicks off with a welterweight banger between Punahele Soriano and Uros Medic.
Everyone on the main card successfully made weight without issue, though there were two weight misses on the preliminary card.
Flyweight Jose Johnson arrived on the scale at 128.5 pounds, 2.5 pounds over the limit, for his bout against Felipe Bunes, while Ihor Potieria came in two pounds over the 186-pound limit ahead of his middleweight bout against Marco Tulio. Both fights will go ahead, as planned, with the two overweight fighters set to surrender a percentage of their purse to their respective opponents.
