Anthony Joshua’s manager says he has a power-packed personality. An elusive fight with Deontay Wilder is all he needs to make his name in America.
In less than a fortnight the British fighter will step into the bright lights of unknown territory. Joshua has set his flag as Britain’s unified champion into the home soil. Now he is ready for his debut in the United States.
“It starts with the fighting, his style, what he brings to the ring,” said his manager “The knockout will be the first part.
“Outside of it, I think it’s just being himself. If you’re one of those guys that maybe talks the talk you only go so far. You need to be a bit wider and he’s got all the ingredients, he’s personable.
“I think the American public like him as well. They seem to get on well with him, it’s just showcasing who he is. Do everything in the ring, everything exciting there, and he can showcase who he is.”
“He’s got the final belt”
The WBA, IBF and WBO king vs Ruiz Jr is set for New York’s Madison Square Garden on 2nd June. The unbeaten British champion aims to deliver a devastating performance stateside.
Following an explosive matchup, Wilder clearly sends a warning sign to Anthony Joshua. After finishing off Dominic Breazeale at the Brooklyn’s Barclays Center he sends a clear message to his opponent. The fight has caused a huge demand for an Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder matchup. While Joshua’s team agrees for a fight that would accelerate their popularity in the United States.
“He’s obviously got a huge record, and he’s got the final belt,” said Cunningham. “All those bits to it make it mega and it will accelerate our popularity in the US if that fight happens, and it has to.
“It’s going to happen”
Anthony Joshua and Wilder, both the champions have so far failed to come to terms for a matchup. Both the fighters blame each other for failed negotiations.
“I think you can see from his whole narrative, he wants it badly, we wanted it badly last fight,” Cunningham told. “We did everything we could to get it for April 13. It just wasn’t the case, so if this goes well and he gets the result we think he might, he’s gone to Wilder’s territory and made a name.
However, for the time being, the British champ seems to be focused more on his Californian based Mexican rival, Ruiz Jr. Joshua aims to turn his attention back to wilder and all the upcoming back to back matchups, after winning against Ruiz Jr.
“I think if the fight is going to happen, it’s going to be a two-fight deal whatever, so it’s going to be one here and one there,” said Cunningham.
“It makes sense to do it that way. They are both huge names in their territories. Why not give the fans in America what they want and give the British fans what they want, so I think it will happen, possibly both, but I don’t know which way around.”
