Cain Velasquez returns to the octagon after two years to face Francis Ngannou on ESPN, at the UFC on ESPN 1 main event.

Velasquez was once a potential candidate as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. However, injuries came in his way, preventing him from reaching glory. Cain Velasquez has only competed twice since 2013 due to various injuries. The former UFC champion’s training partner in American Kickboxing Academy, Daniel Cormier, has claimed the heavyweight throne in his absence.

Daniel Cormier has been able to secure his legacy in 2018 when he became a simultaneous two-division champion. Only Jon Jones has been able to beat him in an MMA fight. Cain Velasquez, who has been out of action for some time, believes he can give Jones good competition. Velasquez said,

“I think I’m good enough. Jon Jones is an amazing athlete. I’ve watched him in all his fights. I know what he’s capable of. Every guy poses a great challenge. I think he does as well.”

“I think I could beat him.”

In the past, Jones has teased a move to heavyweight. However, it seems as though he would rather face Cormier in a trilogy bout at 205 pounds than to move up a division. Jones will defend his light heavyweight belt against Anthony Smith at UFC 235 on March 2. If he clear his weight class, the fight with Cain Velasquez is going to be one exciting match-up.

Velasquez has shown intent if the opportunity arises. Currently, however, his focus is on his upcoming match with Francis Ngannou. He said.

“I’ll take on whoever, I’m back to fight whoever. To me it doesn’t matter. However it all works out with the UFC and who they want me to fight, I’m down with that. First I’ve got Francis Ngannou — a really tough opponent, really strong opponent. He’s a guy that’s been on a roll.”
