Boxing star Deontay Wilder has won the WBC Heavyweight title after defeating Bermane Stiverne. The fight was held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday where Wilder secured an easy victory (33-0) against former champion Bermane Stiverne. With this victory, Wilder became the first American boxer to hold the WBC Heavyweight title since Shannon Briggs in 2006, with the fight being scored 118-109, 119-108, and 120-107 by the judges.
The punch statistics revealed Wilder’s authority, showing he landed 227 of 621 hits including 120 of 420 shots. On the other hand, Stiverne landed 110 of 327 hits, and just 38 shots.
After securing this great victory, Wilder stated:
“I’m going to bring excitement back to the heavyweight division,” Wilder said. “I’m not going to sit around. Whoever is ready, I’m ready.”
Boxing critics commented that Wilder demonstrated a very composed and mature attitude against Bermane Stiverne, who won his first title defense by knocking out his opponent Chris Arreola last year.
On the other hand, Stiverne stated that he was not in his best condition to fight well, saying:
‘It wasn’t my night,’ he said. ‘I didn’t feel 100 per cent. I just couldn’t cut the ring off or move my head like I usually do.’
Deontay Wilder, who is 6ft 7in has now remained undefeated in 32 fights. He is aiming to fight against British heavyweight Tyson Fury, ranked at number 5 by the WBC.
