Many expect that Georges St-Pierre (GSP), 37, will announce his retirement at a press conference in his hometown Montreal tomorrow.
Considered one of the greatest fights of all time, GSP is a longtime former UFC champion.
GSP’s expected decision to retire comes after talks to fight with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov fell through. Despite the turn of events, Nurmagomedov continued to insist that he would fight Georges St-Pierre. He further clarified that he would fight GSP in a location of GSP’s choice.
‘The Eagle’ expressed his feelings in an Instagram post,
“Let’s do it in November. After this fight you can retire. I grow up on your fights, and have nothing but respect for you, and I believe showed that to you George when you were in Moscow, but, it would be honor for me to share Octagon with one of the greatest fighters of all time.’ ‘Let’s do it 155 lbs, or I give away 5lbs to you, cause you newer done 155. Well, it’s your choice 155 or 160. ‘Montreal, NYC, Moscow or Abu Dhabi. Send me location my Friend #GSPvsKHABIB #ufc #mma #history #RUSSIAvsCANADA.”
Georges St-Pierre said that he really appreciated the offer made by current champ but things weren’t that easy. He said he would explain everything at the press conference:
“I saw what Khabib wrote, and I appreciate it very much. Unfortunately, these decisions aren’t up to us. I will address everything at the press conference tomorrow.”
St-Pierre has not been in the Octagon ever since he won the middleweight title by submitting Michael Bisping at 2017’s UFC 217. Even that fight was his first in four years. He vacated the title soon after beating ‘The Count.’
Earlier in August, Georges St-Pierre showed interest in a fight with either Conor McGregor or Nurmagomedov. He said,
“I would be interested in that fight, that’s a win-win situation. It’s a legacy upgrade and it’s good money, it’s gonna be a big fight. I know Khabib, I’ve met Khabib many times. Khabib is actually bigger than me. He’s a bigger guy.”
We’ll find out tomorrow as GSP says. Yet it appears his fighting days are over for now.
