Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months, you must be aware that the former two-division champion, Conor McGregor challenged reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for his belt, which the Irishman had lost previously. The two confronted each other in a tantalizing affair that took place as part of UFC 229 in T-Mobile Arena on October 7. The bout ended with the Dagestan Eagle successfully ending the grudge fight by giving him a brutal neck-crank.

The loss, however, didn’t diminish Dublin native’s spark. Right after being handed with loss, the Irishman started vying for a McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov rematch.

Nothing can be said as of now about a match-up between the Notorious and Khabib Nurmagomedov. If UFC follows a fair route, giving chances to deserving artists, then Tony Ferguson should find himself in spot for title contention. However, the Dublin native has been more than an adept artist for UFC. Mystic Mac’s notoriety and unpredictably has kept him in searing limelight, as he brought huge publicity and revenue to UFC’s plate.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if UFC President Dana White agrees to a lucrative McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov rematch. According to McGregor’s Coach John Kavanagh a rematch between the two is what Conor would fight next.

While talking on The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, this is what the coach had to say,

“Definitely the Khabib one. That’s the fire.”

Kavanagh went on to add that he wasn’t sure whether he would coach his favourite student to avenge his loss against Khabib. According to SGB Ireland head coach,

“I won’t pretend to know the business side of things. Him and Audie (Attar) and Paradigm (Sports Management) they do all that.”

He further added,

“And the fans and the officials decide who gets the next shot. I deal with what’s going to be put in front of me. I think it’ll be the Khabib rematch. I think it will be that. Now, I’ll be getting torn apart on Twitter (for saying that). ‘He doesn’t deserve this and this guy (deserves it).’ I’m only just saying what I think. Is it going to be someone else, will it be Tony whose (going to get the shot) I don’t know. That’s what I see him talking about, so that’s how my mind is.”

If  McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov rematch is materialized, it could earn the Mystic Mac a chance to work his way back up to fame and glory. The Notorious has already showed his interest in facing off the Eagle once again on the canvas. According to McGregor’s recent Instagram post,

“If it is not the rematch right away, no problem,” he said in a lengthy Instagram post reflecting on his latest defeat. I will face the next in line. It’s all me always, anyway. See you soon my fighting fans I love you all.”

Right now the two fighters are sidelined from the octagon until Nevada Athletic Commission completes its investigation for post-fight melee that took part right after the main bout. Both fighters are to be present on the hearing that would take place on December 10.

When questioned about the future of lightweight division, while talking to Express Sport UFC President Dana White stated,

“We’re on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s time now. We’re waiting until November… or December. Whenever that thing is. And when that thing plays out, then we’ll know where we sit and then we’ll know what’s next.”
