The founder of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya claims that he sold 15,000 tickets for the fight between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and James Kirkland within two-hours after putting them on sale.
The fight between former light middleweight champion Alvarez and American Professional Boxer Kirkland is going to be held at 9th May at Minute Main Park at Houston, Texas. Alvarez retreated from a possible fight with Miguel Cotto because apparently he was taking way too long in putting pen on paper.
Not long after Alvarez withdrew from talks with Cotto, Oscar De la Hoya took over the air and announced that ‘El Canelo’ will now be facing the American Slugger Kirkland.
Alvarez has an impressive boxing career with 46 professional bouts in which he won 44 bouts; including 31 knock-outs, 1 loss and 1 draw. Alvarez, who held the WBC and The Ring Light middleweight titles before he lost it in 2013 to Floyd Mayweather Jr, has already begun training for his fight with Kirkland.
Kirkland, once a rising star in the Junior Middleweight category, has had repeated encounters with the law-enforcing agencies which led him to prison several times, ultimately halting his boxing career. Kirkland, who has a remarkable record of 32 victories in 33 fights with only 1 loss and 28 spectacular knockouts, is now resuming his boxing career after 18 months in the prison.
The fight between Canelo and Kirkland will be interesting to watch, but Hoya’s claim that he sold 15,000 tickets in only two hours sounds more like a marketing gimmick to make it to the headline. Kirkland has been out of the ring for quite a while and has apparently gained a lot of weight which is one of the reasons experts are of the opinion that Hoya’s claim is far from truth.
