Donald Cerrone almost landed a fight with Conor McGregor. The ultimate matchup between two of the sport’s greatest icons was inches away. The UFC seemed willing to put together Cowboy’ Cerrone and ‘Notorious’ McGregor and fans certainly wanted to see that. It all looked to fall in place until McGregor put an end to everything.
Donald Cerrone puts it this way,
“Man, it was all the way done our side, it was just Conor — just a bunch of bull**** on his end. I don’t know what was going on, but we were ready, and that’s that.”
Cerrone will now fight Al Iaquinta at UFC Ottawa this Sunday (AEST). Recently, he about how close he and McGregor were to an agreement.
“The UFC was also pushing for it hard, but you know, it’s all on Conor, man. It’s crazy.”
The fight seemed all anyone could talk. In March, Dana White admitted that McGregor was more interested in a Khabib Nurmagomedov rematch. The Cerrone-McGregor fight was dead.
Cerrone responded earlier this year,
“Conor won’t fight unless it’s a main event, I don’t know if it’s an ego thing or a status thing for him. I don’t give a s***. I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, and I stand by that all the time. I guess he’s a prima donna and only takes main event spots. I don’t know.”
For now, Cerrone is done chasing the Irish superstar. However, he admitted that he wouldn’t turn down an offer if it came his way again. He said:
“Of course, I want all the fights. I want them all.”
Donald Cerrone has the most wins in UFC history (22). He also said he would even take a McGregor fight over a 155-pound title shot,
“I would derail the title quest for the Conor fight, for sure. But just to put me right back in line for the title; so it wouldn’t really do much.”
For now, though, he has a job to deal with Iaquinta. Both fighters know a win could put them within touching distance of a title shot.
Cerrone said,
“I’m going to be trying to just push the pace. Keep busy, work his body, and look for the head kick.”
Cerrone and Iaquinta in the Octagon together means only one thing,
“We’re blowing the roof off this motherf***er.”
