Floyd Mayweather Jr has in the last couple of days (2th July 2014) stated that a rematch with Marcos Maidana is on the cards for this September. Many had expected Mayweather to go for a super fight with RDX Sports boxing ambassador Amir Khan at Wembley Stadium later this year but those plans look to have been placed on hold once again. It is thought that Amir Khan could pose the most serious threat to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s unbeaten record with his speed and technique being far and above that of the likes of Marcos Maidana.

Maidana gave Mayweather one of the toughest fights of his career, he bullied him, took control of the ring and kept him on the ropes for large portions of the fight, something we aren’t used to seeing in Floyd Mayweather fights. For the first time Floyd looked like he genuinely was starting to feel his age, and it will certainly give his future opponents some optimism and motivation. So you would have to question what the logic is in delaying a fight with Amir Khan even more with Khan coming in to his prime and Mayweather only getting older.

Bernard Hopkins has proven you can fight at the top level well beyond the age that most people thought you could, that said he loses many more fights than he used to and he gets hit a lot more. Floyd Mayweather certainly seemed to receive many more blows than he is used to in the last Maidana fight, his defence that utilises the “philly shell technique” combined with his speed has always made him so slippery it is impossible to land a clean shot, when Maidana got him on the ropes, kept pressurising him and threw combinations he did actually land a few though so it will be interesting to see what happens in the rematch.

If Mayweather beats Maidana then you would imagine that an Amir Khan fight at Wembley Stadium would be on, if however the unthinkable happens and Maidana finishes the job that he started so well last time we may never see the fight that so many boxing fans around the world are desperate to see.
