Israel Adesanya is all set to fight Kelvin Gastelum on April 13 at UFC 236 for the interim middleweight title. It took Adesanya almost a year in the UFC to reach the top of the UFC. He also won by unanimous decision against Anderson Silva for the main event of UFC 234. The fight also won Fight of the Night.
The UFC will be implementing another interim title at April 13. This will be between Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya for the interim middleweight belt at UFC 236.
The fight venue is still undecided.
Earlier, rumors swirled that Robert Whittaker would defend his title against Gastelum in the main event of UFC 234. However, Whittaker underwent an emergency surgery for a hernia and a collapsed bowel. Because of his surgery, Whittaker vs Gastelum never happened.
As the co-main event on that card, Adesanya vs. Anderson Silva, elevated to headlining status. After Adesanya won the bout by unanimous decision and with Whittaker sidelined by surgery, the UFC decided Gastelum and Adesanya to square off for the strap.
Adesanya, a former Glory kickboxer, took the UFC by storm after debuting in Australia on Feb. 11, 2018, with a stoppage win over Rob Wilkinson. His victims since then have been Marvin Vettori, Brad Tavares, Derek Brunson and Anderson Silva.
