Going in to this weekend’s fight against Shawn Porter in L.A. not many people gave Kell Brook much of a chance of taking the world title back to Yorkshire. Following his nightmare year in 2013 Brook was flying over to the states to take on one of the most highly rated fighters in the Welterweight division. Not only that, we all know if you are fighting an American in America you will have to knock them out to even hope to get a draw – despite all of this Brook was confident going in to the bout.
In the early rounds Shawn Porter was in control, his aggressive style of continually coming forward, throwing lots of punches and fighting on the inside seemed to unnerve Brook who was struggling to use his footwork and move out of the. As the fight progressed Brook began to come in to it more, he was landing some good straight punches and split Porter’s eyelid, this didn’t stop Porter coming forward though. By around round 9 Porter looked as though he’d worn himself out, he was beginning to swing wildly and was struggling to keep up the early pace he’d set. On the other hand, Brook still looked fresh, he was moving well and landing more and more punches. By the end of the fight it was looking close to a draw, which of course is the worst case scenario for an English fighter in America.
In somewhat of a surprise though Brook was announced the winner by majority decision. One judge scored the bout a draw and the other two went for the new world champion Kell Brook. Moving forward it now looks as though Brook wants a British super fight with RDX Sports ambassador Amir Khan. This would be a huge occasion and one to rival Froch v Groves II. Should Khan win the fight you’d imagine next in line for him would be the much anticipated Floyd Mayweather Jr match up.
