Amir Khan’s taunts to pick up a ring-fight with Floyd Mayweather have been proven futile, but the matter is not dead yet. Whilst Khan has been struggling to find a worthy opponent, it’s his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. who has rubbished reports from the rumour mill to suggesting a fight was in the making in under a year.
Earlier, Khan showed interest in having a fight with several big names of the boxing industry but there was no official reply from anyone. The list of possible opponents included the winner of the 2nd May’s “Fight of the Century” (Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao), Kell Brook and Miguel Cotto.
The opportunity to stand in the ring with Pacquiao or Mayweather looks hard to come by for Khan. However, there was no official statements in this regard until now. A recent statement by Floyd Mayweather Sr. cleared Mayweather Jr’s stance on the matter. Mayweather Sr. said that his son and apprentice has no reason to have a face-off with Khan or even the International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kell Brook.
“Khan or Brook? Floyd doesn’t need those guys. Why would he? There is nothing in those fights for him. It is not even in our thoughts. Training is going well and Floyd’s right on track. He’s in great shape,” said Mayweather Sr.
It is worth mentioning that Mayweather Jr. has an undefeated track record throughout his career. He has won all 47 matches of his matches, whilst delivering 26 dazzling knockouts. Mayweather is a five division world champion with silverware piled up on his mantelpiece. In comparison, Khan has a relatively less impressive track record; winning 30 of his 33 fights.
Khan does not possess any title at the moment. Therefore, all the more reason for Mayweather to turn away from the challenge. However, if Khan agrees to a fight with Brook and takes him down acquiring the welterweight championship title, they chances for a fight might come alive.
