Gennady Golovkin, who recently trashed the British boxer Martin Murray in a blood-stained 11-round match-up, has shown interest in a bout with Puerto Rican middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.
Cotto has been challenging big names of the boxing world for the last decade or so and has faced many big names including Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. In 43 matches Cotto has nailed down 39 victories, including 32 knockouts. However, the undefeated Golovkin is unfazed by such facts.
Golovkin is the in the best form of his life. He has marked some very brilliant victories as of late, one after another. In all the 32 professional bouts, Golovkin has a clean slate of victories including 29 knockouts. A premier challenger and favorite contender for the pound-for-pound category, Golovkin’s recent victory against Murray is more proof of why the Kazakh is considered to be a legend in the making.
After the match between Pacquiao and Mayweather was announced, the middleweight champion Cotto was left with no major challengers across the board. Cotto recently planned a fight with Canelo Alvarez on May 2 or June 13; however, being unable to conclude the negotiations the plan could materialize. Falling out of options, Cotto is only left with one worthy opponent now, Golovkin.
“I hope, I hope Miguel Cotto,” said Golovkin, who now has 19 consecutive knockouts on his mantle. “My goal is all the belts in the middleweight division. I need unification fight,” added Golovkin.
Cotto is yet to give his comment on the much-anticipated match-up. However, it can safely be speculated that regardless of his reply, Golovkin will somehow make his way to all the belts in middleweight category.
Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter is optimistic about the Kazakh champion exiting the ring as a champion after the Golovkin-Cotto bout. Citing Golvkin’s frequency of matches, Loeffler said, “If he (Golovkin) were only fighting once a year and not getting a big fight, it would be very frustrating, but Gennady fights so often and stays so active, that it takes some of the sting out of it. We want the big fights and Gennady has said he is willing to move up in weight to get them. But it takes two guys to want to fight.”
