Farcical scenes ended the first attempt at a rematch that was planned earlier in the year at the Phones4U Arena in Manchester. Dereck Chisora first pulled out with an injury to his hand, he was replaced at the last minute by an unheard of opponent for Fury to fight before Fury himself pulled out of the fight on the eve of it. The fight ended up taking place with no main event.
On Saturday night however, it finally happened and as expected it was one of the worst fights not only of the year but probably in British boxing history. Heading in to the fight, Tyson Fury had fought in 22 competitive fights and his most difficult opponent to that date has been Dereck Chisora, a very unimpressive record for someone who genuinely believes he can become heavyweight champion of the world. Compare that to someone like David Haye who isn’t even a natural heavyweight (unified titles at cruiserweight). He was small compared to a lot of the guy he was up against but was knocking out people like Audley Harrison, Dereck Chisora and Americans like Monty Barrett within 2 rounds on a regular basis. Tyson Fury is much taller and a more natural heavyweight yet struggles to throw more than 20 punches in a round and hold sustained attacks.
The actual fight between Chisora and Fury doesn’t really need much reporting. Chisora entered the ring and was effectively a punch bag for 10 rounds. He stood there, trying to cover up, barely threw a punch and took punishment every round. Eventually his corner threw in the towel and retired him. The home crowd were booing and most had actually left before the fight had finished. It really was one of the most boring fights you will ever see.
Tyson Fury is now looking forward a fight with Klitschko, which will almost definitely end with a convincing win for the Ukranian. Fury has never moved up to the next level with people like Valuev never mind the might of the Klitschko brothers.
