The excitement for this UFC Fight Night in Mexico was almost gut-wrenching. Mainly because 4 of our fighters were competing, and two of them against each other. Mexico City was all about the guts and glory last Saturday.
UFC has been shadowed by the fame of the upcoming Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing fight and that is why they spared no detail to make the Fight Night a huge success.
Main Event: Brandon Moreno vs Sergio Pettis
Brandon Moreno vs. Sergio Pettis was the main event of the night. 23-year-old ‘Assassin Baby’ fought hard and made everyone, including us, proud. It was a close fight indeed.
Pettis survived a very crucial and brutal attack by local favorite Moreno when he almost submitted him in the opening round. Having Sergio in all sorts of trouble early, it looked like the fight would’ve ended via rear naked choke, but ‘The Phenom’ defended throughout.
Round two to four Pettis attacked with surgical precision, applying his technical stand-up game against a brawling Moreno. His striking was too on point until Moreno landed one final takedown in the fifth round that could’ve proven difficult for Pettis but alas by the bell of the fifth, the fight was over.
This was Pettis’s 7th win and now he is heading towards a possible title fight, though he hasn’t called for it yet, fans and MMA critics want the ‘Mighty Mouse’ to fight Sergio.
Martin Bravo vs Humberto Bandenay
Watching our two ambassadors, Martin Bravo from Mexico and Humberto Bandenay from Peru, fight each other in the octagon was exciting and anguishing at the same time. MMA, after all, is a brutal sport, and only one person comes out the winner, fortunately, it was our ambassador Humberto Bandenay via head kick KO but unfortunately against one of our own.
We wished both of our fighters’ good luck, Bandenay (14-4MMA, 1-0 UFC) came out as the heaviest underdog of the event against Martin Bravo (11-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC). The fight was a close one, a fast one and a very exciting one all at the same time.
The best part about this fight was Bandenay, who dedicated his victory to his late father. He said:
“It was one or the other – go back to Peru and see him before he passed away, or live my dream away,(which was) also his dream. Because my dad said, ‘Go live your dream. Don’t come back.’ I have my dad in my heart, and he was today with me in my corner. He would be super proud of me. He’s my No. 1 fan, and this victory is for him”
Jose Quinonez vs Diego Rivas
Jose Quinonez scored one of the biggest wins of his career in impressive fashion against an undefeated Diego Rivas, against all odds.
We had complete faith in himself as he stepped into the octagon and after he won, we felt the pride and joy of our motto: Giant Inside being portrayed through his indomitable spirit to get in there and show the skill difference between him and Diego. Rivas was all sorts of bewildered and didn’t seem to have an answer for the crowd favourite.
