Current UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier wants to fight Jon Jones before he calls it a quits and hangs up his gloves.

As a guest on today’s edition of the ‘Helwani Show’, Cormier revealed his desire to fight ‘Bones’ at light heavyweight. Speaking about the third fight with Jones, Daniel Cormier said:

“It’s all I want, I think when I fight Jones, I feel most complete when I’m preparing for competition against that guy.”

Both champs have met twice in the past. Their first encounter occurred at UFC 182 in January of 2015. Jon Jones won the fight through a unanimous decision.

The bitter rivals met again at UFC 214. Once again Jones proved victorious, winning by knockout.

That victory later overturned to a no-contest as Jones tested positive for the banned substance turinabol.

Jon Jones responded to Daniel Cormier’s request for a trilogy fight earlier today on Instagram. Jones wrote:

“Somebody tell that man to just stop already.”

‘Bones’ is scheduled to defend his UFC light heavyweight title at July’s UFC 239. His fights against surging division contender Thiago Santos.

Daniel Cormier expected to fight Brock Lesnar, but since Lesnar just announced his retirement, that’s not happening. Now Cormier will end up fighting Stipe Miocic again after defeating him at UFC 226 last year. They’ll run it at UFC 241 in August 2019.

Cormier said he’d only stick around after Miocic fight if it was a trilogy match with Jon Jones. But… it has to be in the light heavyweight division just like it was in their first fight where Cormier lost.

“It’s all I want. If I do stick around, that would be the fight that I would do it for. It would be at 205 pounds because I need to go and get that back from him.”

If both men come up victorious in their upcoming title fights, is a trilogy fight between Jones and Cormier the right fight to make next?
