In what is expected to be a show-stopping fight, the date has almost been confirmed for the finale between two of the top-rated fighters of the boxing world, former junior WBA/WBC middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez and ex- WBO NABO light middleweight title holder James Kirkland.

Oscar De La Hoya, former Mexican American professional boxer and president of Golden Boy Promotions, has revealed plans of presenting this electrifying twelve-round bout himself. The fight will be staged by Golden Boy Promotions and telecasted on HBO; but will be a non-Pay-per-view bout.

Both the opponents will lock their horns in May at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The dates of the match are rumored to be on either 2nd or 9th of May, depending on Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s ongoing negotiations for a fight scheduled for around the same time, set to be at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

If the deal between Mayweather and Pacquiao comes to fruition, then the fight will be moved to a different date. The primary reason for the change of date due to issues with HBO. Since this will be a Pay-per-view telecast on Showtime; HBO doesn’t want the two events to go down on the same night.

Kirkland has earned 32-1 in 33 fights and is currently on a five-match winning streak. However, for the past couple of years Kirkland has been inactive in the boxing industry. His last victory was against Glen Tapia on Dec. 7, 2013.

His opponent, Alvarez, has 44-1 on his resume. He has fought with some big names in the boxing world, such as Mayweather Jr., Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara. His only defeat was in September 2013, against world’s pound-for-pound champ Mayweather. His last win was against Erislandy Lara on July 12, 2014.

Alvarez is very excited about his match against Kirkland. He believes this will be an entertaining fight for the boxing aficionados. Alvarez is tipped to win, but Kirkland is somewhat of a dark horse, making this a tough one for the experts.
