World Obesity Day

We are here to tell you that you are NOT!

World Obesity Day Commitment

Before you may have thought I need to lose weight to do martial arts or join a combat sports class but today that all should stop!

You Do Not need to be in shape to do MMA or boxing.

You Do Not need to lose weight before joining an MMA or boxing gym.

That’s the whole purpose of combat sports like boxing for example; you can get into shape and lose weight. You will also get stronger, build confidence, relieve stress, burn a lot of calories, and get many other benefits.

Be Patient

Now that you have decided to join a combat sports class. Pick one sport. No Excuses.

You will see a lot of people coming to class that are fitter than you and pick up the moves and techniques very easily.

Don’t worry about them.

In fact, just ignore them.

You shouldn’t compare yourself to anyone. Eventually, with commitment and focus, you will get better at it.

Because of your weight you will have to move at a snail’s pace. But move you shall!

Prepare for Reality

You will not make it through your first training. That’s a fact.

Don’t be embarrassed by it. It is to be expected. You have to keep coming back and try to keep up with the rest of the class.

That’s how you get respect. Rule 1 of combat sports: have no quit in you when you join combat sports.

Another thing to be prepared for…

You will feel awkward and out of place.

All these young and fit athletes will be all around you doing physical feats that are impressive.

There you will be trying not to cough out your lungs.

They will not want to train with you because you will be not-so-good at the sport.

Again…

It is to be expected and it Shouldn’t phase you!

Don’t be turned off by all of this, because it is the harsh reality and you have to come to terms with and be determined to beat all these hurdles.

Intimacy of Combat Sports

Many people don’t realize this but there is an intimacy in combat sports, especially BJJ and MMA.

You have to practice moves and be in every awkward positions with other fighters.

Not to mention the fact that you will be sweating buckets when you are doing these moves.

If you are bigger than most people in the gym, you will feel unconfident and hesitant when you are asked to practice those moves.

That initial hesitation will go away. Trust Us.

Once you get into the physicality of the sports, you will start to get more confident.

Emotions will be all over the place

One minute you will feel good about yourself. The next you will be regretting your decision to join a combat sports gym. Then you will be back to the good feelings again.

This emotional roller coaster is part of every fighters’ training regimen.

Know that you are not the only one facing this situation.

You have to let the emotions come and be free of them when you train.
