Boxing fans were given a show to remember the night of 16 Sep. Gennady Golovkin and Saul Alvarez, the best middleweights in the business, battled inside T Mobile Arena. Both boxers fought their hearts out and made the boxing world proud. But when the final bell rang, GGG vs Canelo ended in a controversial draw.
GGG vs Canelo Decision Controversy
The controversy was caused by one of the judges when they scored the fight in favor of Canelo by a wide margin.
The judge in question has been ‘disciplined’ by Nevada Athletic Commission, as per sources.
She will not be scoring high-profile fights anytime soon.
A Possible Rematch
The fight was too close to call, as the breakdown suggested, and the end result showed that.
Both GGG and Canelo seemed to take control at different stages of the fight. Each landing clean shots and each enduring the punishment in return.
The post-fight comments from both fighters reveal that they both believed they did enough to win and the result was disappointing.
They were both very eager to step into the ring again and GGG vs Canelo 2 could be on the books very soon.
Unless the champ decides to go in another direction.
The Championship Unification
It has been a dream of Gennady Golovkin to unify all the middleweight championships. The only one left is with Billy Joe Saunders.
Saunders just successfully defended his WBO middleweight title against Willie Monroe Jr.
He had expressed the desire to fight the winner of GGG-Canelo but that seems to be in doubt now.
Golovkin would want nothing more than to get his mitts on Saunders, the only hurdle is that Saunders isn’t keen on the idea.
Golovkin and Alvarez will rest up after their epic fight and make their next decision in time.
We will see in a few months if GGG’s dream comes true or will he have to face Canelo once again.
