Paulie Malignaggi, the recently retired boxer and former sparring partner of Conor McGregor, has been in the news a lot lately. Flinging allegations and insults at McGregor. When you take a moment to think about it, you will see that he may be trying to plan the second biggest fight in sporting history.
Malignaggi and his Plan
While Conor McGregor is preparing for the biggest fight of his career against an unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. he has enlisted some sparring partners to prepare him for the challenge.
Paulie Malignaggi was one of the MMA star’s training partners until very recently.
He stormed out of the training camp and startling hurtling some very damaging remarks towards ‘Notorious’. His aim it seems is to get another big pay day.
His strategy it seems was to get the attention of the combat sports world and he has succeeded.
Talk of the town is a potential fight
After the claims, Malignaggi has made and the way he has publicly criticized Conor McGregor, all everyone can talk about is when the two will fight.
That’s the formula for getting a big fight. You get the world talking about it and get the ball rolling.
What would be interesting is if Malignaggi steps into the UFC octagon to take on Conor. Fans of MMA and McGregor will love to see that matchup after all that has gone down between the two.
More realistically, Paulie would never do that. Any potential matchup will be in the boxing ring, but it would not have the magnetic pull that Mayweather-McGregor matchup has. But is it still would be interesting.
Conor’s attention
Whether Conor or his camp respond to all the talk or not, the conversation has been shrewdly started by Malignaggi.
McGregor is currently laser focused on his Aug 26 boxing bout, but you can be sure that he is keeping an eye on what Malignaggi is saying and he will definitely ‘address’ him in due time.
For now, McGregor has to worry about facing Mayweather at the T Mobile Arena in 16 days’ time.
