The main reason why Diaz Brothers have been away from the octagon in eyes of teammate Jake Shields is nothing else but money.
Nick Diaz’s return to the octagon has made Diaz Brothers fans euphoric. Even the brass of UFC has responded favorably to the news. While it seems imminent that the older Diaz would be returning to the canvas to dust off his nearly 3-year-old cage rust, many still wonder why the Californian brothers remained out of UFC’s limelight despite having huge fan base and an unmatched, unique potential. Nate Diaz hasn’t put foot on canvas since losing at the hands of Conor McGregor in 2016. Nick, on the other hand, made his last appearance inside the octagon in 2015.
A few weeks earlier when Nate got a chance to show his prowess against Dustin Poirier, he came up with social media statements that indicated he wasn’t too keen on taking up the fight. Just days before the fight, Poirier got injured and had to pull out of the bout. The news of Nick taking up Jorge Masvidal in UFC 233 are rife, however, fight terms haven’t been finalized yet. So what is the reason that the Diaz Brothers are taking too long to resume their paused careers?
Diaz Brothers teammate Jake Shields attributes the lack of drive to make a comeback to only one factor – money.
While discussing the Diaz Brothers comeback to UFC Shields told BJPenn.com,
“I still go back to California to train with Nick and Nate Diaz. I have trained with them a lot. Currently, I am in New York so I’m not training with them as much,” Shields added. “I have trained with these guys non-stop for years now. I think they both want to fight still, just not as often. Nate is just waiting for the Conor fight or big fights, and same with Nick, he was just waiting for big fights. They both had great careers already, so they are just looking for the big money fights now.”
Though Nick absence can also be attributed to USADA issues, however, had he checked with them the last time he got suspended, he could have been cleared off to make a return.
His upcoming brawl seems to open the door to resume his MMA career. But only time can tell whether 35-year-old American fighter would be making it to Anaheim in January. As for the younger Diaz, there are a lot of options for him. He could land a Poirier fight, face brass from lightweight category or consider a trilogy fight once McGregor gets his go ahead from Nevada Athletic Commission.
However, there is nothing certain at the moment and the future of these fights is unpredictable. Which is quite similar to the Diaz Brothers.
